What Are You Aiming At?

Can you hit a Cloud?

We've all experienced it at one point or another. Noobs. Seasoned veterans. Casual. Hardcore. It's you and them. One on one. Mono y mono. You pull the trigger first. Unload 15 clips into their back only for the seemingly invincible vigilante to turn around, shoot 6 shots into your face sending you to an unwarranted rendezvous with the infamous respawn countdown. Don't we all just love looking down at our corpse in 360 panoramic view. What fun? The real question finally dawns on you. "Why...won't...he...die? AHHHH!!!!!" But the better question is, "What are you aiming at?"

I hate to admit it, but at one point, I could have been labeled as competent at best in first and third person shooters. I would always get the jump but could never understand why the "frag" always eluded me. My target was locked on. Hey. It was red. And to an old school noob, that was good enough for me. And at the time, it worked...Against other "noobs." But once you start playing high level, i.e. semi-pro to pro players. Sorry to break the news to you, but it...will...not...work.

Open Season

Think of it this way. If you watch a movie where someone is shot in the kneecap, they may go down and maybe even scream for dear life. But I promise you that they...will...not...die. Unless they trip and fall off a clff, face first through a second story window, or something extreme and out of the ordinary. The bottom line is...a shot in the knee will not frag an opponent instantly. They may bleed to death. But instantaneous. Never.

So how do the pros no scope you from across the map? Win 1v1, one versus one, battles everytime. Hint. Pros always use slower, stronger, precise weapons over quick, weaker, spraying guns any day of the week. And now is the time you have all been waiting for. The tip and strategy for first and third person shooters for noobs for the century. Drum roll please.

This is a bad situation ....

Aim...For...The...Head. The head. The head. The head. And if you someone how missed what I just said the last 4 times...The Head!!! If a sniper only has one shot that must get the job done, where do you thing he is aiming. The head. Der, der, derr.

When developers program these games, they split the 3D animated characters into strike zones. It is a complicated program. But it basically states, a character at any given time has 'x' amount of health. Ever time a player is hit, depending on the type of weapon, distance from opposing player, and angle and location of impact, a certain amount of damage is inflicted. If the damage inflicted is greater than the current amount of health, then character is fragged. Otherwise repeat. With certain weapons the head "zone" is recorded as an instant kill, i.e. snipers and shotguns from close range. But even with other weaker weapons, head shots dramatically increase the damage inflicted on a particular shot.

So next time you play with your frineds or a "random" player online, pay special attention to where you are being hit and where you are shooting. You just may have better skills than you thought, if you only know what you are supposed to be aiming at.
